This year has been very tough for me. I’ve found myself experiencing certain lows that I never thought I would see. There were moments where I was sad, depressed, and confused about my life — leaving me to feel uninspired and unable to see the beauty that’s within me. I tried looking through Instagram in hopes of getting a little inspiration to spark a flame of creativity but to no avail. Reading motivational books, listening to podcasts, meeting up with friends, and in-depth conversations with loved ones still did nothing for me. At the time, I was dealing with a lot all at once. Having to process everything at the same time was pulling me away from myself. I kept battling the feeling of something being wrong with me and that in my mind, it must have meant that I needed to pull inspiration from someone else.
We are constantly looking to everything and everyone, outside of ourselves, for inspiration. Now, there’s nothing wrong with being inspired by other people. It just has to be done in a healthy way. Meaning that we need to be mindful that the “inspiration” of other people and their life doesn’t turn into “aspiration” for our lives. In today’s society, it’s very easy to cross the inspiration – aspiration line. Often we feel that our life isn’t going “well,” and somehow, if we were living the lives of the people that inspire us, we would be better. That is so far from the truth. We don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes of their life. Your life is your life, and how it plays out, including the unsettling parts, has every bit to do with pushing you to be the better you.
I realized that one of the main reasons why I stayed in those negative spaces was because I was looking to have someone else’s life but my own. The desire to aspire to have someone else’s life because it looked “good” made me see myself in a negative way, which will never do you any good while you’re trying to be true to yourself. During those frustrating times of life, take a moment to appreciate yourself. Don’t run to Instagram for that inspiration, run to yourself first. You hold more than enough inspiration inside of you to pull you through. Focus on your purpose and allow that to drive you to see how great you are. Be your own inspiration, and remember to be purposely you.
